How Far I’ve Come

Looking Back Gently

Taking time to look back can help you notice how far you’ve come since your stroke. Reflection isn’t about judging yourself or focusing on what hasn’t returned yet. It’s about seeing your journey with kindness.

When you reflect gently, you may begin to notice small changes that once felt impossible — moments of strength, learning, or adjustment. Reflection can also help soften self-criticism and invite compassion for everything you’ve been through.

Some memories may bring mixed emotions. That’s okay. Reflection can hold both pride and sadness at the same time.

Honouring Your Journey

Surviving a stroke takes immense courage. Living with the ongoing effects takes determination, patience, and resilience.

Every appointment attended, every rest taken, every effort made — even on the hardest days — is part of your journey. You may not always recognise your own strength, but it is there.

Honouring your journey means acknowledging not just where you are now, but everything it took to get here.

Helpful Strategies

Here are some gentle ways to reflect with care:

  • Reflect with kindness - Speak to yourself as you would to a friend. Avoid harsh judgments and focus on understanding.

  • Write or talk about changes - You might write a few notes, keep a journal, or talk with someone you trust about what has shifted — emotionally, physically, or mentally.

  • Notice resilience - Look for signs of perseverance, problem-solving, and adaptability. These are real achievements.

  • Celebrate survival - Simply being here matters. Survival itself is something to honour.

  • Be proud of effort - Effort counts, even when outcomes aren’t visible.

You have come a long way — even if it doesn’t always feel like it. Your journey is unique, and every step forward, however small, deserves recognition.

Take a moment to acknowledge yourself. You are still here. You are still trying. And that matters. 💙
